We haven't added a lot to our blog since the family got together over 4th of July so I thought I'd give it a try.

On October 5, 2011, Logan Matthew Ball was born in Cambridge, MA and I was able to get there just in time. Kayla and I had a great time together while Braden and Tiffany adjusted to this new addition to their family.

On November 5, 2011, Mason Anderson Wolf was born in Sunnyvale, CA. Ashley and I were excited to visit Terrill and Emily and Mason in the hospital just hours after he was born. Two days later Rudy, James and Jen were able to join us at Terrill and Emily's apartment to welcome Mason to the family.

On Christmas Eve Rudy and Ashley and I opened some presents with Terrill, Emily and Mason and James and Jen. For one of my Christmas presents Rudy had ordered Christmas dinner from our favorite caterer, Barbara Llewellyn. It was a great day.

On Christmas Day we went to church and then our good friends, Ken and Janet Johnson invited us over for dinner to celebrate Christmas with them and their daughter Dara and new son-in-law Jeff. Ashley and I also made Christmas cookies.

On December 28th Braden, Tiffany, Kayla and Logan arrived. That night we all drove down to Sunnyvale for Mason's blessing.

That night we celebrated a Happy New Year a little bit early so we could all go to bed. I know, a bunch of party poopers.

On January 1st we all attended our ward sacrament meeting for Logan's blessing and then took pictures out in the backyard.

Rudy Travels

I know it has been a while since we added to this story. Here is a quick update on Rudy's travels. Tomorrow, Mom and I will add another update or two. In October, I spent a few days in Disneyworld at a convention. I always carry my camera with me, and could not resist this evening shot of the Epcot dome.

As you know, I fly to/from Bellevue every week. Once in a while, I get wonderful views, like this one of the Golden Gate, shot on a Friday flight returning from Bellevue. Or the following one of Mt. Rainier and Crater Lake. One for each state I fly over. Usually, pictures turn out a lot better in the afternoon - so that is typically on the way home.

We tend to spend our July 4th at Lake Tahoe, inviting as many family or friends as will fit. this year, we had a blast, with the entire family there, at least some of the time. This year, we also had our granddaughter, Kayla with us. Obviously, we all had a lot of fun - boating, wake boarding, paddle boarding, hiking, playing on the beach, and just plain relaxing.

Kayla had a lot of fun on the boat. She clearly enjoys getting ready for the boat, but as you can see, she really enjoys steering the boat!

The whole family was able to attend church together, so we have our family picture below. Actually, we are all getting pretty good at posing - except with Kayla, we need to take a few more shots than we used to take. Thank goodness for digital camera!

Monday, we tried paddle boarding. Tons of fun - and much more exercise than what it looks like. Of course, one needs to contemplate going into water that is run off from the snow in the mountains.

Speaking of paddle boarding, some folks were just glad to make it back to shore:

And because we are so tough, and 2010-2011 was such a long, wet, cold winter - the same day we played in the water in the morning, we played in the snow that afternoon!

Evening of July 4th is always fun. Here are Ashley and Kayla posing, and most of us in the back of the boat waiting for the fireworks. This picture is a tradition as we celebrate the 4th. Trick is to not have so many in the back that we start to take on water if the waves are big - which they weren't this year.

This summer, we found a new way to enjoy a day on the lake. Leave early, find a small, isolated beach, and position the boat so you have some privacy - then enjoy the day on your own private beach. This is probably one of the most relaxing days we had during the week.

We also went for hikes. With Kayla, they tend to be a bit more exercise than a normal stroll through the woods. If it was a rock, it was a launch pad. It was just very important that someone is around to moderate the takeoff and landing!

After an evening stroll, the next day requires another boat trip.. we looked for a private beach again, but alas, we were a bit too late, and the lake was a bit too high, so the beaches, what few remained, were all taken. This year, the lake is approaching record high water levels. After driving around much of the lake, Rudy needed to take a break.. so he turned the helm over to his trusted second in command. Just to prove how accomplished her steering skills are, she used a most unusual technique. Yes, the boat really was moving - but it is a big lake, with few boats, and no safety issues.

Because we had several days, we finally did have another day on the beach. We also have a favorite go anywhere camera - water, sand, drop proof, and apparently - kid proof. What it is not able to do is take a clear shot with a finger in front of the lens:

Seems like we still need some technology improvements before we can call it truly kid proof!

Tahoe in June

So this weekend I was at Lake Tahoe with two business associated (founders of Ring-o-Rang). We had a good time making minor fixes to the cabin, cleaning up, and testing the boat after the winter layover. The good news, the cabin and boat are ready for the summer. The lake is really full, and likely to get more full, as authorities are not letting water out of the lake. Apparently there is so much runoff from other rivers, they are afraid the Truckee river can't take that additional load of the lake spill. So, we should enjoy this high lake time. We went in and out of some wonderful coves below Thunderbird Lodge. One of my favorite pictures of the trip.

We'll need to go to this one and just hang around for the day.

While we were on the lake, I wanted to get a picture of Robert and Brent, but the usual angle was just not good enough, so I decided a shot from lake level would be a more unique perspective.

Of course, the problem with that is that I actually had to be at lake level, so yes, I got into the lake. This will redefine cold for quite some time!

Yes, it was very refreshing... to say the least. For the record, Robert and Brent were so excited, they wanted to go for a tube run, which they did, but with wet suits... still did not stop them from getting cold and wet, especially when they fell off the tube - three times. All in all, a good day at Tahoe.

Northwest Spring - May 2011

Laurie and Ashley came up to Bellevue for a few days before and over Memorial Day weekend. It gave us a chance to celebrate two birthdays with Braden, Tiffany and Kayla. Kayla, being the young woman that she is, of course had to have makeup and lip gloss, and fortunately, she has a willing aunt to help her. In return, she "helps" her aunt Ashley! How much fun is that!

Kayla loves Cinderella. So Tiffany made this remarkable cake to celebrate Kayla's birthday.

Tiffany also made this beautiful tutu for Kayla, handsewn. Is she cute, or what?

On Saturday, we took the touristy trip to Pike's Place market and the Space Needle. It was a great day for sightseeing.

Later that day, Grandpa got a little silly with the tutu... but the grand daughter loved it, so who cares about the silly. I can see why older folks get less inhibited, what's not to love about getting that smile from Kayla?

We finished the travel day at our favorite family restaurant, where Kayla was exceeding busy with intense coloring!

That night, we also pre-celebrated Ashley's birthday with a wonderful ice cream cake made by Tiffany. Another wonderful few days in the Northwest.

Yosemite Phototour

I have always wanted to see Yosemite with the waterfalls in full bloom, and we did just that for a week in May. Laurie and I joined a photography workshop in Yosemite. We arrived on Sunday afternoon, with rain and then snow greeting us as we moved to the higher elevations. It was beautiful. Each day, we went to specific locations (Monday - valley floor, Tuedsay - Vernal Falls, Wednesday - all over the valley, Thursday - hike to Columbia Point, Friday - more spots on the valley floor). Laurie was a great sport... and I had a blast. Combined, we took over 4,300 pictures! I put some of our favorites below. I hope you enjoy them.

Monday was a bit blustery, with fog and clouds and rain - perfect for picture taking!

Monday was not a very pleasant day. Throughout the day, it rained, or was foggy, and it was cold all day. But the light conditions were remarkable. Lots of interesting clouds and fog throughout the valley. The lack of bright sun didn't deter the hardy photographers from plying their trade.

Tuesday, we headed up to Vernal Falls... it was a nice trek, but rainy and cloudy. So those pictures didn't make the top ten. But with all the rain and cold, we saw fog forming in the valley. So Tuesday night, we headed to Tunnel View, and waited, and waited and waited. Here is the view of the fog playing amongst the trees.

After it was almost completely dark, and the fog was really settling in, Laurie took a remarkable, 7 minute exposure. Enjoy.

Wednesday, we woke up to four inches of new snow at our rental. We were at 6,000', and barely got out of our steep driveway without inflicting major damage on the car. But it was sunny, so instead of learning about photoshop, everyone wanted to get back to taking pictures.

This one of El Capitan made the cut. Wednesday then began to cloud up again, and we all got drenched. Thursday was much better. A beautiful, sunny day. We packed all our gear into backpacks for the climb up to Columbia Point and the base of Upper Yosemite Falls. We gained 1,000 feet in a mile! Like going up stairs for an hour! But the view was totally worth it!

Friday was another beautiful, clear day. We drove to several more spots around the valley, taking more pictures and practicing what we learned during the week. Flowing water was the theme for the day.

Here, we heard sightings of a bear and two cubs nearby. I thought I saw them, and headed off with my large lens to see what I could find... No bears, only ravens picking at something across the river. Not one to let a photo-op go, I captured some flowers lit up by the sun.

We then headed to Cascade Falls to further practice our theme for the day. Laurie was the master of composition. Check out this remarkable shot...

Every time we drove through the valley, we went by these lovely falls alongside the road. On Friday, we finally had the chance to spend time there and enjoy the roar of these mighty falls.

Just to be clear, these falls are maybe two feet tall. I could straddle the entire stream. But they are ever so cute!

As we were heading to dinner, before our final shoot, we spotted a throng of tourists busy snapping pictures. All week, Laurie was waiting to see a bear.. and there, right before our eyes, was a bear. A terrific end to the week.

We need to leave already? I still want to play in this tree!

The cubs were a riot. They were up and down the trees so fast! Finally, we went to dinner and waited for evening, so we could get our last shot. All in all, a very nice week. We have about 4,290 more pictures, if you want to see more of Yosemite. I would recommend you go there yourself... Pictures can't do it justice, though we tried.

Ashley's Graduation

Ashley graduated from college on April 29, 2011. This is her story (at least of her graduation from the eyes of her parents). Laurie flew in early, to help Ashley pack her things, give away her things, throw away her things, and take lots of pictures. She took many wonderful pictures, and we are sharing a few here.

The whole family flew in to help Ashley enjoy her special time. Tiffany and Kayla flew in from Seattle with Rudy, Terrill and Emily flew in from Philadelphia, Jen and James from Oakland, Braden from Boston. Most everyone arrived on Thursday in preparation for the ceremonies on Friday. The ceremony took place on Friday afternoon. Afterwards, we took a few pictures at UVU, and Ashley had a chance to share her special time with her favorite niece!

Kayla had to be bundled up... it was cold and snowing in Provo on April 29th.

Afterwards, we all drove to La Caille in Sandy for dinner. A tradition for all four kids... though this time the group was a whole lot bigger than when we started, and we loved having everyone with us!

If you look closely, you can see the snow on the bridge, and on the ground under the carriage. We look great, but everyone was shivering... a cold evening!

The next day, Laurie and Ashley flew back to Oakland, while Rudy got to have a Road Trip! what a blast. I got into some trouble with Laurie because of all the pictures I took while driving, but it really wasn't that dangerous... there were very few other drivers silly enough to be on the road with me.

Digital Memories: 1991

Pictures truly are worth a thousand words. Over the last few months, I have been scanning in many of our negatives, and completing our digital library. While I undoubtable have thousands of negatives to go, I can't help but share some of the pictures I have recovered so far. Given the wild and crazy clothing, I have permission from specific children to post these pictures! I hope they bring back to you the same loving memories as I had when I first saw these pictures come back to life on my computer screen!

We started in Portland Oregon, and stopped at the Tetons first. Truly magnificent mountain range, and a beautiful valley to the east.

As you can see, taking pictures the old fashioned way was not always as sure fire as it is today with digital cameras that let you see the shot immediately. Occasionally, the pictures were out of focus, but the photographer had no clue until it cam time to see the negative, usually days or weeks after the shot. Oh well, you can still see the bright colors of the 1990's. This is three ham bones high above the RV cab.

Mom usually found a way for Tiffany, Jennifer and Terrill to stay occupied while I was driving. Typically, I got up early and drove. Kids would wake up a hundred miles down the road, have breakfast, and get going while we were driving. Around noon, we would stop at our first sightseeing location, grab lunch, and explore.

Some kids enjoyed time to themselves - listening to tunes and drawing, while we were cruising down the road... ah, the simple life... music, drawing, and a road trip!

We took in many fun places... Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, and the Devil's Tower (home to the major scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind). Note the subdued colors of the very comfortable clothing!

Laurie hand drew the shirts we wore at the family reunion! Here is the whole family, June, 1991, standing in front of the RV in Wisconsin.

While in Wisconsin, the kids did a lot of fun activities... fishing, horseback riding, playing cards with distant relatives, hiking through the woods, boating on a pontoon boat and many more! These are just a few of the classic photographs. For the record, Ashley did not enjoy the horse solo, but with her sister, this was fun.

Terrill apparently plays cards much better when his sister helps him decide what to play.

After the reunion in Wisconsin, we travelled south to visit historic Church sites. We actually drove over the Mississippi river, and then took a ferry (RV and all) back across to Nauvoo.

We also stopped in Provo, to show the kids both where Mom and Dad spent two years, and to show them where they would be spending time during their college years...never hurts to set expectations early.

Please let me know if you enjoy these fun pictures from long ago. As I found out yesterday, we have hundreds of pictures yet to go. I plan to share them with all of you on the blog, but also make them available on CD, once we get them organized and labelled.

April Weekend in the NorthWest

Laurie came up to Bellevue this weekend. Friday, the girls went shopping and to lunch....

After a long day of shopping, it was time to head home. Saturday morning, it was time for a walk. Note the matching headgear... Daddy and Daughter! Spring has sprung, and the flowers are starting to arrive.

After a few minutes of walking, headgear and jacket quickly came off. Kayla doesn't really walk that much... mostly running or standing still. Walking simply is not part of the repertoire!

We did manage to get her to to stay still for just a few pictures. Mom and Dad overlooking the lake. And resting on a stump, both offered a chance to rest from the 2 mile hike.

When she was walking, she found some sooo cool things to do... like stepping into the mud puddle,

or finding a walking stick, or is that a sword?

Yikes! She's even coming after Grandpa!

We were still able to find a nice place to take a breather, and enjoy another photo-op!

Tahoe in April

There is still plenty of snow in the Sierras. Laurie and I decided to spend the weekend in Incline Village with Ken and Janet. We arrived Friday night, late, and found snow all around the cabin. Looking out, late at night, we saw snow through the windows. The following morning gave us a better idea of just how much snow fell this winter:

While the driveway is clear, a major pile of snow is on the front yard.

After breakfast at Wildflower, we headed up for a few hours of snowshoeing. What a wonderful time we had. Gorgeous scenery, friendly wildlife, and a storm blowing in from the west. We had sun, wind (50 mph), and snow.

Only a quarter mile in, the Chickadees asked for food. Everyone had the chance to feed the local wildlife!

At the top of the ridge, it looks quiet. Looks are deceiving. It was blowing very hard just 20 yards behind us. No Chickadees on the ridge today. They were all hiding out lower, where the wind is calm. We ran into two couples and three dogs on our journey. They were kind enough to take this picture of the windblown party.

Coming back down, we paused on the trail for quick pictures. Storm was blowing in, and we were racing to make it back to the car before we were caught.

A little way's further down the trail, we came to a tranquil little meadow, where we paused for yet another photo-op. It was snowing here.

Terrill - this one's for you. Look, no lift lines. Once he got started, he was all over the meadow. There was plenty of wind to keep him snowboarding all afternoon.

Half Moon Bay to Carmel

As we drove down the highway, you can't help but appreciate the beauty of the California coast!

This weekend, Laurie and I decided to celebrate our birthdays... with a road trip on the coast. Laurie picked me up from Oakland airport. Just an hour later, we were at the beautiful Half Moon Bay Ritz-Carlton! We had a cottage room for the evening.

Posing for a picture by the firepit was wonderful. Posing for a picture near the waterline can be a bit more thrilling. Laurie and I were about to get kissed by a wave. Of course, I was closer to the waterline, so was a bit more worried than my fun loving better half!

Friday evening, we walked around the grounds, had a wonderful meal, and enjoyed a spectacular sunset. The next morning, we got up at a reasonable hour, had breakfast, and then posed for a few pictures, before heading down the coast toward Monterey and Carmel. Our cottage had a nice deck, with a firepit that we both really enjoyed.

And finally, I want to offer a small tribute to a family friend who passed away on Friday. Raja has been with us for 17 years. He added joy, laughter and companionship to our family, and will be missed.

Halloween

Devil's Temptress, Sorcerer - That is how Laurie and I went to a neighbor's Halloween party Saturday evening, after our trip to/from Incline! We had a great time catching up with folks we have not seen and talked with in a while. Terrill - I chatted with Steve Stock at the party... he told me he knows you and worked with you at Symantec. He is now working at Kaiser.

Today, Laurie and I had to run an errand up to Tahoe... had to pick up our generators and snowblower from the repair shop. They were in for their tune-up. Now that they are back at the cabin, we are really ready for winter. And by the looks of things, this could be a really good winter.

And this is Boreal on the way back from the cabin - only 2 hours later! Boreal opened for the season yesterday. Boarders are already coming down the slopes. Usually, resorts are thrilled if they can open by Thanksgiving. This could be a really good snow season.

Laurie and I celebrated Laurie's birthday tonight... after meeting at the Oakland airport, we drove to San Francisco. We got there in time to enjoy an hour long birthday shopping trip at Macy's (sunglasses, shoes). Then we walked over to her favorite eatery... Morton's Steakhouse. Rib-eye on the bone for Laurie, Filet on the bone for Rudy. Awesome! Waiter even took our picture.

East Coast Part 1

So we did the trip.. Pike's Public Market in the morning - what a lot of fun (that's where we got the fish), and then a quick run to the Space Needle, so we could get our picture with the fish! After the Space Needle, we drove up to Everett, and toured the Boeing Factory - what an immense building. We saw the 747, 777 and 787 assembly lines in the world's largest building (by volume)! Go around the entire building and you would walk 2.2 miles. A door for the 777 and 787 assembly lines (the door the planes come out of) is the size of a football field, laid on it's side. The whole place is just enormous! It was a ton of fun. Then we headed back to Bellevue, grabbed some unique food at Wild Ginger (a restaurant in Bellevue) and walked around the mall. What a fun day with Jen and James.

So this week, Jennifer, James and Laurie came to stay with me in Bellevue. They arrived late Thursday. Friday was a local day in Bellevue - shooting range (no one got hurt!) where we had a blast, hehehe; lunch and mild shopping at Bellevue Square ( a four block indoor shopping mall), what else would you expect where it rains a lot, and AVATAR. If you haven't seen it in 3D at IMAX, you need to. Unbelievable! Really Cool! A new paradigm in movie making.

Today, we are headed to Seattle - Pike's Market, Space Needle, Chittenden Locks, Everett Boeing Plant. Should be fun!
